3. Dana Claxton: Hunkpapa Woman

Storytellers in Motion is a non-fiction series about aboriginal film, television and storytelling - featuring the storytellers themselves
Dana Claxton

Dana Claxton (Hunkpapa Lakota) is an interdisciplinary artist, whose vast body of work is deeply imbued by her worldview as a Lakota woman and her fierce commitment as an artist to truth in telling the stories of the Indigenous community.

This episode opens on-set, as she directs the production of “Patient Storm”. Dana’s passion for her work is evident as she describes her love for the freedom and mobility of video, a perfect format for an artist who is unconventional, multi-layered, and an ardent spokesperson on issues of colonialism, stereotypes and assimilation.

Through her life and her work, Dana Claxton continues to be an outstanding spokesperson for Indigenous self-determination and what she calls “the politics of being Aboriginal”. Her aim has always been to express and inform “how we think as Native people.”
